Congolese Girl, 9, Dies from Ebola
Two weeks after a Congolese woman died from Ebola, the deadly virus has now claimed the life of a nine-year-old Congolese girl in Uganda.
The east African country has been on high alert since the start of the Ebola outbreak in neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in August 2018, which has resulted in the death of more than 2 000 people.
According to reports, the unidentified girl had been travelling with her mother from the DRC to Uganda on Wednesday, 28 August, when she exhibited symptoms of Ebola at a border crossing in the southwestern Kasese district.
Despite being transferred to an Ebola treatment unit – and placed in isolation – in the town of Kasese, the girl succumbed to the haemorrhagic fever-induced disease this morning, Friday 30 August.
Ugandan health officials say they are currently working with their counterparts in the DRC to make arrangements for the girl’s body to be taken back home for her burial.
