Colombia Plane Crash: Plane Reportedly Ran Out of Fuel

December 02, 2016

Aviation officials investigating the crash of the Colombian plane that crashed in Medellin on Tuesday have reportedly confirmed that the plane ran out of fuel before it crashed to the ground.

The plane was carrying players and management officials of the Chapecoense Football club of Brazil.

Only six people out of the 77 people on board survived the crash. Three of the survivors were players.

Aviation authorities have since confirmed that after they were going through the wreckage of the plane, they could confirm that the airplane did in fact run out of fuel.

“…Having been able to do an inspection of all of the remains and parts of the plane, we can affirm clearly that the aircraft did not have fuel at the moment of impact,” Alfredo Bocanegra, civil aviation chief said.

This finding corroborates what an earlier leaked audio of the plane’s captain told radio controllers after making a distress call.

He said that the plane was ‘experiencing a total electric failure [sic]’ and that they had ‘run out of fuel.’

With regards to the lack of fuel, some reports are suggesting that the pilot decided not to refuel at a refueling stop en route.

Apparently the pilot had the option of refuelling in Bogota en route to Medellin, but decided not to.

On Wednesday night, the night the match between Chapecoense and Atletico Nacional had to take place, many people gathered at the stadium in colombia as well as at Chapecoense home ground to observe 90 minutes of silence for the victims.

There was silence broadcast instead of the match that would have lasted 90 minutes.
