Classes Suspended At UCT And Wits
With the ongoing rally of protests happening at various universities around South Africa, it was announced today that classes at both the University of Cape Town as well as the University of The Witwatersrand have been suspended for the day.
The classes for today will no longer take place, after student protests have escalated. Students have reportedly blocked entrances at various points on both campuses in an effort to prolong their protest on fee increases.
Fee increases for the 2016 academic year was recently released and various students across many universities in South Africa have taken protest action to protest against the increases which they claim is too high.
While the protest started at Wits, it quickly had a domino effect on all the other universities across South Africa, with UCT, Rhodes and the University of Stellenbosch organising their own protests.
However, reports are also suggesting that the protests at Wits has turned violent, with students allegedly being armed and breaking down glass doors.
Both universities have said that they will resume classes tomorrow.
