China Bans Katy Perry

November 17, 2017

China has banned US popstar Katy Perry from entering the country indefinitely.

The 33-year-old songstress was set to perform at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in Shanghai this coming Monday.

According to reports, Perry was initially told she would be allowed into the country.

However, Chinese authorities reversed this decision when they discovered an incident in 2015 involving the star.

During a performance in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, Perry wore a bright dress with sunflowers on it. The sunflower has become a symbol of anti-Chinese sentiment in Taiwan.

Perry also waved a Taiwanese flag during her show.

China and Taiwan have a tense history, and have argued for decades over Taiwan’s independence.

China has a long history of banning celebrities for various misdeeds, and this is not the first time they have banned Perry. She was previously banned in 2011 for being “vulgar”.

Media reports are questioning how the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show will go ahead as planned, as a host of top models, including Gigi Hadid, have also been banned for various posts on social media.
