Chibok Girls: Nigeria Marks 1000 Days Since Kidnap
On Sunday the 8th of January, Nigeria marked the 1000-day mark since the abduction of more than 200 girls from a school in Chibok by Nigerian terrorist group, Boko Haram.
Speaking on Sunday to commemorate the 1000-day mark, Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari said that the government was doing everything in their power to to continue rescuing these girls.
Thus far, it is estimated that there are at least 195 girls still missing. Late last year another group of girls were rescued by the Nigerian army.
Buhari said that the government is committed to bringing all the girls back safely and that the heartache of the missing girls is still greatly felt by the whole nation:
“…We are hopeful that many more will still return…The tears never dry, the ache is in our heart,” he said.
He continued saying that it remains the government’s goal to finding the girls:
“…Our hearts will leap for joy, as more and more of our daughters return. It is a goal we remain steadfastly committed to,” he concluded.
The latest girl to be rescued by the Nigerian army was Rakiya Abubakar, who was found last week along with her 6-month old baby.
