Chelsea, Newcastle Go Head-to-Head for Areola

Several reports are suggesting that two English Premier League clubs, Chelsea and Newcastle United, are going head-to-head to acquire the services of French international, Alphonse Areola.

According to French newspapers, Newcastle United manager, Rafa Benitez, is on the lookout for a new goalkeeper, after his team managed to make a return to the coveted Premier League in April.

Benitez is said to be plotting a £13.3 million bid for Areola, who is currently signed with French Ligue 1 side, Paris Saint-Germain.

However, Areola has also been on the radar of Chelsea manager, Antonio Conte, for quite some time, and has been one of the club’s targets from the start of the summer transfer window.

While Chelsea have not put forward a formal bid for the 24-year-old, it’s believed that they won’t hesitate to get involved in a bidding war with Newcastle.

Areola had an impressive stint with Paris Saint-Germain last season. He conceded only 21 goals in 22 appearances for the club.

His height, he is 1.9 metres tall, and calm demeanor have also earned him praise from critics, many of whom believe the youngster is on his way to becoming one of the best goalkeepers of his generation.

Areola began his international career playing for France’s U-16 national side in 2008.

He was a member of the France U-20 side that won the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2013.
