Cheap, college foods turned gourmet
If you are a college student (or any person under the age of 25 really) you would know that cheap, easy foods are a staple in your diet.
However, there are simple and inexpensive ways of spicing these dishes up so they are a little more gourmet than gross.
- 2- Minute Noodle Mac ‘n Cheese
Mac n Cheese is a favourite all over the world and 2-min noodles are a favourite for college kids all over the world. Here is an easy, inexpensive way to step up your 2-minute noodle game.
Ingredients:
2 packs of 2-minute noodles (any flavour as you will just be using the noodles)
1 cup of grated Cheddar cheese
¾ cup of milk
1 tbsp cornstarch
Mix the grated cheese and the cornstarch in a bowl. Then, in a small saucepan, mix the cheese and cornstarch and milk together over a medium heat until the cheese melts.
In a separate saucepan, make the two minute noodles. Do not add the flavouring that comes with the noodles. Then add the cheese sauce to the noodles and voila!
- Salad in a Jar (yes, really)
This dish is not only cheap and easy to prepare – it’s a really cool way to package a salad for in between classes and it’s healthy.
Start by acquiring a jar thats big enough to carry a salad in it. Think of the jars your ouma used to use to make jam or pickled onions. They’re real name is called a Mason jar.
You can literally make any salad in them, its all about layering you see.
This one is a favourite, though. And oh so delicious.
Ingredients:
1 cup butter lettuce
½ cup Rosa tomatoes, diced
½ cup cucumber, diced
1 cup smoked chicken, chopped in pieces
2 tbsp mixed seeds
2 tbsp grated Parmesan (or Feta)
Start your layering process with the heaviest food first. So on this case, that would be the chicken.
*Side note – if you want a dressing over your salad, put that right at the bottom.
Then, add your tomato and cucumber followed by the Parmesan, mixed seeds and finally, lettuce.
The lettuce goes right on top so it doesn’t get soggy at the bottom of the jar.
Once everything is in, seal the lid and give the jar a good shake.
When you are finally ready to devour your yummy salad, simply shake it again and pour into a bowl. Super easy to carry around and it helps in your salad stay fresh and crisp.
