May 18, 2016

The Chadian government has said that the are launching an investigation into the disappearance of more than 20 soldiers.

The soldiers went missing days before and after the election that took place on April 10th.

Prosecutors in Chad announced launch of the investigation yesterday, after increased pressure to do so from France as well as various rights groups.

According to state prosecutor, Alghassim Khamis, said that investigators have already started to interview the families of the soldiers, as well as hospital staff and other people linked to the soldiers.

The Chadian League for Human Rights (LTDH) and Amnesty International announced that there were soldiers missing on April 28th and called on the government to take action.

It is believed that the soldiers went missing just as Chad’s president, Idriss Deby, was re-elected as president for a fifth term. He has been ruling the country for 26 years.

It is believed that some of the soldiers that went missing resisted pressure to vote for president Deby.

Now, the French foreign ministry has also added pressure on the Chad government to and authorities to initiate a probe into the missing soldiers.

Some of the reports coming from Chad suggest that there are way more than 20 soldiers missing, some even saying the number is as high as 60. They have also claimed to have found the bodies of at least four dead soldiers.
