Cardiff City’s Sala Feared Dead after Plane Disappears
Cardiff City’s record new signing, Emiliano Sala, remains missing, presumed dead, after the light aircraft he was travelling in disappeared near the Channel Islands on Monday evening, 21 January.
The 28-year-old Argentine striker – who signed with the Premier League outfit on Saturday, 19 January – was en route to Cardiff, Wales after visiting his former FC Nantes team-mates in Nantes, France.
As confirmed by French authorities, he was onboard the Piper PA-46 Malibu aircraft that was reported to have disappeared from radars around 20 kilometres north of the island of Guernsey in the English Channel.
In a WhatsApp audio message reportedly sent from Sala to his relatives and friends, he is heard saying: “I’m on a plane that looks like it’s going to fall apart.”
He later added: “If in an hour and a half you have no news from me, I don’t know if they will send people to look for me, because they will not find me, you know. Dad, I’m so scared.”
The search for the aircraft, which was suspended after 15 hours on Tuesday night, is set to resume.
