Cardi B Says Sorry to Hindu Fans
Cardi B has issued an apology to her Hindu fans, after they called out her appropriation of their religion.
Appearing on the cover of the November issue of “Footwear News”, the 28-year-old rapper is seen wearing a red dress and holding a red sneaker from her Reebok collaboration.
Most prominent, however, are the eight arms appearing behind her – an image based on the Hindu goddess, Durga.
Social media users took issue with the cover, accusing Cardi B of religious appropriation.
In response, the “WAP” hitmaker uploaded a video to Instagram on Tuesday, 10 November, to apologise.
She said: “The [Reebok] creatives were telling me, ‘You gonna represent a goddess, that she represents strength, femininity and liberation’ … and I thought that it was dope, but if people think I’m offending their culture or their religion, I want to say I’m sorry. That was not my intent. I do not like disrespecting nobody’s religion.”
Reebok also issued an apology the next day on Instagram, writing: “We realize [sic] we were not considerate of certain cultural and religious perspectives, and how this could be perceived as deeply offensive.”
