Cannes Film Festival 2017: Winners

The annual Cannes film festival is undoubtedly one of the most glamorous film festivals in the circuit, but it is also one of the toughest
The two-week long festival only awards films that have made an exceptional impact on its esteemed panel of judges. This year the judges panel was chaired by famed Spanish director, Pedro Almodovar.

The festival in the South of France drew to a close on Sunday, when the winners were revealed.

Palme d’Or: The Square

The biggest award of the festival, the Palme d’Or, or overall best picture, went to Swedish film, ‘The Square’ – a dark comedy satire film about the contemporary art world.

Grand Prix: 120 Beats Per Minute

The Grand Prix award is perhaps not as coveted as the Palme d’Or award, but it is nevertheless a remarkable achievement for any film.

This year’s winner, ‘120 Beats Per Minute’ is a French film by director Robin Campillo that focuses on the AIDS epidemic in Paris in the 1980s.

Jury Prize: Loveless

This year’s Jury Prize was awarded to ‘Loveless’, a Russian drama directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev.

The sombre film centers around a Moscow couple looking to find their child who disappeared, while struggling through a divorce.

Best Director: Sofia Coppola

American director, Sofia Coppola, picked up the award for Best Director, becoming the second woman in the history of the festival to do so.

She won for her directorial work in the film, ‘The Beguiled’, starring Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning.

Best Actress: Diane Kruger

German-born actress, Diane Kruger, who has made quite a name for herself in Hollywood, won the award for her role in the German film, ‘Aus dem Nichts (In The Fade)’. This was her first film where she spoke solely in her native language.

Best Actor: Joaquin Phoenix

Joaquin Phoenix won the coveted Best Actor award for his role as a former soldier turned hitman in the film, ‘You Were Never Really Here’.

Best Screenplay: Lynne Ramsay and Yorgos Lanthimos

The Best Screenplay award was shared this year between Scottish director, Lynne Ramsay, for her film ‘You Were Never Really Here’ and Greek director, Yorgos Lanthimos, for his film, ‘The Killing of a Sacred Deer’.

Special Prize: Nicole Kidman

Oscar-winning actress, Nicole Kidman, was awarded the jury’s Special Prize.

The award was given to her to commemorate the festival’s 70th birthday and to celebrate Kidman’s performances in various films shown at the festival.

She had four different films show at the festival this year.
