Canada: 16 Dead in Mass Shooting
Sixteen people have been killed after a man disguised as a policeman embarked on a 12-hour shooting rampage in Canada’s Nova Scotia province.
According to Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officials, the spree began on Saturday evening, 18 April, in the rural town of Portapique. After arriving at a residence following an emergency call, they found several bodies inside and outside the property.
The perpetrator – identified as 51-year-old Gabriel Wortman, a denturist from Dartmouth – was dressed in a RCMP uniform and driving a vehicle resembling a police car.
Wortman soon switched to driving a Chevrolet as he proceeded to carry out more killings at locations between Portapique and Enfield. Several homes and two police vehicles were reportedly also set on fire.
Among the casualties was Constable Heidi Stevenson, who served the RCMP for 23 years.
Per reports, Wortman was shot dead by the police on Sunday afternoon, 19 April, at a truck stop in Enfield.
An investigation into Wortman’s motives behind the shooting is underway. Authorities say that more victims may be discovered.
