Cameroon Wins AFCON 2017
The ‘Les Lions Indomptables’ have been crowned the winners of the 2017 African Cup Of Nations in Gabon, after beating Egypt two goals to one.
Cameroon were also considered the unlikely champions, after coach, Hugo Broos, struggled to secure key players for his AFCON squad. Many players, from European and other leagues, refused to honour call-ups to national duty.
Broos also said that a lot of the players were unmotivated and did not seem interested in performing their national duties. However, Broos then introduced a host of new, young players into the team, that seemed to kick-start the morale within the Cameroonian camp.
Thus, Broos’ squad was a fairly ‘new’ squad, but beat all odds by clinching the title.
“It’s true that when I came to Cameroon nearly a year ago I found a group of players who were old, not motivated, so I had to change that [sic],” Broos told reporters after the win.
He continued, saying that he now has a great team.
“The players were not coming to play for Cameroon, they were going because they had to, because the coach asked them to come…So I brought in some new young players and we started working. We did a good job and now today we have a team [sic],” he said.
Cameroon has a solid performance throughout the final and it was goals from Nicolas Nkoulou and Vincent Aboubakar that secured the win for the team.
Broos also went on to praise his team’s camaraderie and sportsmanship, saying that the team is like a group of friends.
“I am very happy that we won the Cup of Nations today and I am happy for the players – this is not a group of football players, they are a group of friends”.
