Cameroon Opposition Leader Charged with Rebellion

Cameroon’s main opposition leader, Maurice Kamto, has been charged by a military court with various offences which carry a death penalty.

Last month, Kamto – along with 28 of his supporters – were arrested in the economic capital of Douala after his party, the Movement for the Rebirth of Cameroon (MRC), staged multi-city protests against the country’s president, Paul Biya.

Six people were left wounded after security services broke up the protests by firing live ammunition on the protesters.

Appearing in Yaounde Military Court last night, Kamto was charged by the prosecutor’s office with offences that include rebellion, incitement to insurrection, and hostility against the homeland, among others.

According to Kamto’s lawyer, Emmanuel Simh, his client’s supporters are also on trial for the same charges.

In accordance with Cameroonian laws, Kamto and his supporters could all potentially face the death penalty if they are found guilty.
