Brazilian Teen Teaches Poor Communities to Make Hand Sanitisers

August 28, 2020

As coronavirus (COVID-19) cases rise in Brazil, a high school student is doing his part to help those living in vulnerable conditions to defend themselves against the virus.

Brazil currently has 3 764 493 confirmed COVID-19 cases, making it the country with the second-highest total infections in the world.

At particular risk of contracting the virus are impoverished citizens residing in “favelas” – slums that are known for being unhygienic and polluted.

To help them, Gabriel Aun Klinger – a student at a high school in Sao Paulo – organised a crowdfunding campaign in March, in which he raised enough money to buy hygiene products and food items for over 500 families in those favelas.

Among these items included the ingredients to make hand sanitisers, with the 17-year-old student teaching the residents how to prepare sanitisers themselves.

By June, Klinger was able to distribute a second round of these products and food items to those who needed them.

Klinger said: “It felt incredible to be involved in the community in this way, and be able to make a real, tangible contribution during a time like this.”
