Botswana Man Nabbed for Alleged Cheetah-Selling Plot
A Botswana national is expected to appear in a South African court for allegedly attempting to sell a live cheetah, as well as lion bones.
According to reports, the 42-year-old suspect – who has to be identified – was arrested last Friday, 6 December, after one live cheetah and several lion bones were found in his possession.
The suspect was allegedly planning to sell the cheetah and the bones – worth R400 000 altogether – to a potential buyer in South Africa.
Nomthandazo Mnisi, a spokesperson for the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime unit, explained in a statement that a transaction was arranged with the suspect, leading to his arrest
Alongside the unit, Kuruman Stock Theft and Kuruman Highway Patrol also assisted in apprehending the suspect.
Mnisi added: “The cheetah received medical attention and will be kept at a sanctuary for rehabilitation.”
The suspect will appear in Kuruman Magistrates’ Court in the Northern Cape today, Monday 9 December.
