Boston Dynamics’ Robo-Dog Goes Global

November 03, 2020

From sniffing around radioactive ruins to being a waiter, Boston Dynamics’ robotic dog shows no signs of slowing down.

The four-legged robot – affectionately named “Spot” – undertook a mission on 22 October to identify dangerous, radioactive hotspots around Chernobyl Power Plant in the town of Pripyat, Ukraine.

Spot also took on a new job this week that’s a little more laid-back: serving beers in Seville, Spain.

Videos have cropped up on Twitter, showing the automaton – same name, but obviously not the same radiation-seeking robot – carrying a tray of beers to relaxed punters at a bar in the metropolitan area.

Another video was uploaded by the American robotics company to YouTube over the weekend, showing Spot trotting around the Spanish city, taking in the sights.

One thing is certain: whether it’s reminding park-goers of social distancing in Singapore, to herding sheep in New Zealand, these mechanical canines have proven effective in doing a wide-range of jobs. Truly they are man’s best friend.
