Boko Haram Launch Attack on Maiduguri
Residents of Maiduguri in the north east of Nigeria have said that their city was attacked by Boko Haram militants on Wednesday.
Maiduguri is the capital of the Borno State of Nigeria. The Borno State is often referred to as the ‘birthplace’ of Boko Haram.
According to residents, dozens of Boko Haram militants raided the outskirts of the city and launched attacks on residents. The group of militants reportedly attacked the military barracks of Giwa on the outskirts of the city, before making their way into the city.
Residents described hearing the overwhelming sound of gunfire and other explosions at approximately 7pm.
Residents and their children started to flee the city after hearing the gunfire and explosions, and many were hit by stray bullets.
There have been no reports of fatalities as of yet.
According to reports, a spokesperson for the Nigerian army, Brigadier General Sani Usman, sent out a message to residents in the area, saying that the situation was ‘under control’.
While the residents of Maiduguri may be accustomed to attacks by Boko Haram, this has been the first major attack in months.
The Nigerian army is yet to release a statement on the attack, but reports from the area suggest that the situation has been contained.
