Boko Haram Attacks Nigerian Town, 60 Dead
Members of terrorist group Boko Haram attacked a town in northeastern Nigeria on Monday morning, 4 February, killing at least 60 people.
According to Amnesty International, the deadly attack took place in Rann, a border town located in the Borno State. Many of its buildings served as shelters for displaced people who had arrived there recently seeking protection.
The members drove through the town, setting houses on fire and killing people that were left behind. Some fleeing residents were chased down and several were killed outside town.
The attack comes two weeks after Boko Haram attacked the same town, driving out Nigerian soldiers and marking its resurgence.
Witnesses say that the soldiers abandoned their posts a day before Monday’s attack.
Osai Jigho, the director of Amnesty International Nigeria, condemned the attackers’ actions.
He said: “This attack on civilians who have already been displaced by the bloody conflict may amount to possible war crimes, and those responsible must be brought to justice.”
