Biggest Premier League Deals 2017
The record-breaking £200 million move of Neymar from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain is by far the biggest transfer that was completed this year. Even though the mega-deal wasn’t struck by a Premier League club, the sheer scale of the transfer set the tone for the cash that was splashed out by the rest of the top leagues.
Premier League clubs spent a total of £1.4 billion over the transfer window. Both Everton and Liverpool broke their transfer records twice in one window. Newcastle United was the only club not to break their record in the last two years.
Here are some of the most expensive transfers of the season:
Chelsea: Alvaro Morata – £70.6m
Old record: Fernando Torres – £50m (2011)
Although Antonio Conte could not succeed in luring Diego Costa away from Chelsea, he found a fitting replacement in Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata. The Spanish national hit the ground running at Stamford Bridge.
Liverpool: Naby Keita – £55m
Old record: Mohamed Salah – £39m (2017)
Liverpool broke their record more than once during this transfer window. Mohamed Salah originally beat the £35 million deal for Andy Carroll, which was concluded after Torres’ departure in 2011. Naby Keita’s deal of £55 million surpassed that of Salah soon after. Keita will not link up with the Reds until next season – in the meanwhile he will spend another year with RB Leipzig.
Arsenal: Alexandre Lacazette – £53m
Old record: Mesut Ozil – £42m (2013)
Despite Arsene Wenger’s positive start to the summer, by the end of this last transfer window, Arsenal fans seemed to be at breaking point. Wenger’s quick move for Lacazette showed the kind of opportunism and ruthlessness rarely associated with the Frenchman’s transfer deals.
Everton: Gylfi Sigurdsson – £45m
Old record: Jordan Pickford – £30m (2017)
Ronald Koeman joined the Premier League elite by closing the deal for Swansea’s Sigurdsson. It was the longest running saga in English football and took an eye-watering figure to get it over the line.
