Beyonce Battles Over Branding “Blue Ivy”
Beyonce is not budging on trademarking her daughter’s name, as she trades legal blows with a wedding planner over the branding of “Blue Ivy”.
“The Lion King” starlet is currently involved in a legal dispute over the trademark for the name with Wendy Morales, who owns a wedding planning business called “Blue Ivy”.
Court documents show that Beyonce is seeking to prohibit Morales’ business from using the name – which is the same name as her seven-year-old daughter
The documents also indicate that she has listed her daughter as a “cultural icon”, adding further that the name is instantly recognisable to consumers. Also, the addition of “Carter” ties it firmly to the “commercial impression of the celebrity Blue Ivy Carter”, rather than the boutique wedding business.
Beyonce’s lawyers argue against Morales’ claim, saying that the business has a “weak online presence” with “poorly subscribed social media accounts.”
Despite the wedding planning business being in operation three years before the birth of Blue Ivy, Beyonce and her husband, rapper Jay-Z, have been trying to get the name trademarked since 2012.
