Barcelona May Leave La Liga
Barcelona’s president Josep Maria Bartomeu has acknowledged the possibility of leaving the La Liga league, should the Catalonian region gain independence from Spain.
Due to the violent Catalan independence referendum, Barca was forced to play behind closed doors at Camp Nou against Las Palmas, tainting Barca’s 3-0 win.
Gerard Figueras, Catalonia’s sport minister, has suggested that Barca could play in the Premier League should the region secede from Spain. He also said, “in the case of independence, Catalan teams in La Liga – Barcelona, Espanyol and Girona – would have to decide whether they want to paling in the Spanish league or a neighbouring country like Italy, France or the Premier League”.
Barcelona are 24-time La Liga champions, trailing only rivals Real Madrid, who have won 33 times.
