Barcelona Make Champions League History
Barcelona has made Champions League history by qualifying for the quarter-finals on a 5-6 aggregate after beating Paris Saint-Germain during a truly shocking match last night.
The odds were firmly stacked against Barcelona, who had to score six goals in order to make it through to the next round of the Champions League.
While Luis Suarez scored a goal for Barcelona early on in the game, the real action only started later on on the game, when it looked like all was lost for Barcelona.
However, goals by Lionel Messi and Neymar put the hope back into the Spanish team.
The biggest moment of the game came in over time, a mere two minutes before the final whistle blew, when Sergi Roberto scored the sixth, and ultimately miracle goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
The goal made history and sent Barcelona to the Champions League quarter-finals – something they may not even have expected themselves.
One Barcelona team member that never gave up hope, even with the immense odds stacked against them, was manager Luis Enrique.
Speaking to the media after his team’s incredible win, Enrique said that he felt there was a sense of belief among the team and that he never stopped believing.
“I don’t think anyone stopped believing. After seeing them sit back despite the goal, the team were incredible…We risked everything and it paid off. You get finales like this very occasionally in football and this time it was our turn…A feat like this does everyone good and I’m delighted to enjoy a moment like this. The key was our efficiency. The sixth goal was scored with the hope of the fan who was on the other side of the world,” he said.
