Barcelona Fined €300 Over Transfer Controversy

September 27, 2019

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) have ordered Barcelona to pay €300 for breaking the transfer rules in their process of signing Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid in July this year.

Atletico claimed that the French forward had already agreed to terms with Barca before July – when his release clause was £200m – but the Blaugrana delayed the transfer and waited until it was reduced to €120 million, in order to avoid paying a further €80 million.

Despite Barcelona’s acknowledgement their fault, the RFEF said due to lack of sufficient evidence to prove the accusations and Atletico’s early announcement that Griezmann was leaving, the Blaugrana will face a lenient punishment.

Barca was therefore ordered to pay a minimum fine of €300 or alternatively, play one home fixture behind closed doors.

However, Atletico have had a great start to the season without him, as they currently occupy the third position of the La Liga table, three points ahead of Barcelona in sixth.
