Bad Bunny Makes History Amid Political Grammy Night

February 03, 2026

Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny secured a landmark victory at the 2026 Grammys, taking home three awards: Album of the Year, Best Musica Urbana Album, and Best Global Music Performance on Sunday, 1 February.

His project, “Debi Tirar Mas Fotos”, is the first Spanish-language record to claim the Academy’s top prize, beating heavyweights like Kendrick Lamar and Lady Gaga.

The evening was defined by a strong stance against immigration enforcement. While accepting his award for Best Musica Urbana Album, Bad Bunny declared: “Before I say thanks to God, I’m gonna say: ICE out! We’re not savage, we’re not animals, we’re not aliens. We are humans and we are Americans.”

Other winners joined the protest, with Billie Eilish stating, “No one is illegal on stolen land,” and Gloria Estefan pleading for “humanity” regarding children in detention centres.

The night also saw Steven Spielberg achieve EGOT status, meaning he has won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony, after winning Best Music Film.

This historic ceremony reflected a broader shift in the industry, as the Academy celebrated a more inclusive vision of mainstream success that places global languages and cultures at the forefront of popular music.
