Backlash over Aaliyah Lifetime biopic

Lifetime’s highly anticipated Aaliyah: Princess of R&B premiered over the weekend and caused a storm of negative reviews online and on social media platforms such as Twitter and Instagram.

The film, which was controversial to begin with since Aaliyah’s family voiced their disapproval of the film seeing the light.

The story, casting and everything in between was criticised by Aaliyah friends and fans including Aaliyah’s longtime producer Timbaland, who also posted some memes on his Instagram.

Timbaland called in to Hot 97 radio station to share his feelings about the film with ‘Ebro in the Morning’. Here’s what he had to say:

The executive producer for the film, Wendy Williams, responded to the critics on her TV talk show making it known that the movie pulled in over 3.2 million viewers, making it the second highest rated television movie this year.
