Austria: 3 Dead in Suspected Terror Attack
At least three people have been killed and 15 seriously wounded after multiple gunmen embarked on a shooting rampage in central Vienna, Austria.
Last night, Monday 2 November, the perpetrators opened fire on civilians with rifles at six locations in the city, starting near the Stadttempel synagogue. Two men and one woman were killed.
The shooting came mere hours before Austria’s nationwide lockdown against the coronavirus went into effect.
Speaking at a press conference this morning, Tuesday 3 November, Interior Minister Karl Nehammer said that the police managed to shoot and kill one of the suspects at his residence.
The suspect, Nehammer explained, was described by the police as a “radicalised” sympathiser of the Islamist State terrorist group, and was apparently equipped with a fake explosive belt at the time of his death.
At this point in time, the authorities believe that the suspect did not act alone, and that at least one other gunman remains on the run.
Schools in Vienna have been closed, and residents have been urged to remain at home as the investigation continues.
