Attack near London Mosque
In the early hours of this morning, a man drove a white van at high speeds into a crowd of Muslims gathered outside of the Muslim Welfare House, near the Finsbury Park Mosque.
The group of Muslims had just left the mosque following their Ramadan prayers.
Witnesses said that the suspect was yelled, “I want to kill all Muslims,” as he drove into the crowd, killing one and injuring several others.
The van came to a stop when the man drove into a bollard. He then got out of the van and attempted to flee the scene, but was stopped by three men who tackled him to the ground and managed to detain him until authorities arrived.
Abdul Rahman, one of the men who managed to detain the suspect, said:
“When the guy came out from his van he wanted to escape, run away and he was saying ‘I want to kill Muslims. ‘I want to kill Muslims’…I hit him on his stomach…he fell to the floor… and then me and the other guys… we held him to the ground until he couldn’t move. We stopped him until the police came.”
London authorities have confirmed that they have taken a 48-year-old male suspect into custody.
According to the latest reports, at least eight people have been taken to hospital.
British Prime Minister, Theresa May, said that the incident is being treated as a ‘potential terrorist attack’.
“I will chair an emergency meeting later this morning. All my thoughts are with the victims, their families and the emergency services on the scene,” she said in a statement released early Monday morning.
Authorities have not yet released any further information on the suspect.
