Atalanta Thrash Everton

Everton succumbed to Atalanta in a humiliating 5-1 home defeat in a Europa League group stage match on Thursday.

The Toffees, who were already out of the competition, were embarrassed in front of their home crowd by the Italian side.

The loss leaves Everton at the bottom of Group E with just one point from five games.

Everton have faced management upheaval this season.

Manager Ronald Koeman was sacked in October, and was replaced by a temporary caretaker, David Unsworth, until a permanent replacement could be found.

Wayne Rooney, who left Manchester United for Everton during the transfer window, has given Unsworth a ringing endorsement, despite their loss.

He said: “Since David Unsworth has come in, there has been a great atmosphere amongst the players, some positive results and the players are enjoying day-to-day training.”

The 32-year-old forward has also called on upper management to make a swift decision and to end the club’s managerial uncertainty.

Unsworth, who has expressed interest in making his temporary role permanent, voiced his disappointment at the loss. “When you put on the shirt you have to play with pride and effort and they didn’t do that,” Unsworth said.
