Anti-Mugabe Activist Freed at Last

September 27, 2016

Linda Masarira has finally been freed on bail after 82 days in Chikurubi Prison. Linda, an activist and mother to five small children, was incarcerated on 6 July after she took part in anti-government demonstrations.

For almost 12 weeks, Linda watched as protesters were arrested and freed –  yet she remained in custody, away from her family. Lower courts repeatedly denied her bail after state prosecutors claimed Masarira to be the head organiser of the shut down Zim anti-government protests that shook Harare in early July.

Former education minister of Zimbabwe, David Coltart, was quoted as saying: “This is another example of law being used as a weapon against those who oppose this corrupt and ruthless regime”.

Finally, late yesterday, High Court judge, Justice David Mangota, ordered Masarira’s immediate release saying that he found no reason why bail should not be given. In addition to this, Justice Mangota said that there is no admissible evidence linking her to the crimes she is accused of.

After keeping (conveniently) quiet during her imprisonment, now that Linda is being released, female advocacy group, Justice for Women Zimbabwe has decided to make a statement:

“[We applaud] the brave ruling by Justice Mangota ordering the immediate release of Linda Tsungi Masarira who had been illegally incarcerated for standing up for women’s rights”.

Pastor Mawarire, who was arrested on 12 July after organising a strike, and who is now living in exile, tweeted:

“Victory is not only Linda’s release. It is that she still stands strong coz they tried 2 crush her spirit. Welcome home @lilomatic #ThisFlag“.
