Angola Confirms First Two Cases of Zika Virus in the Country
Health officials in Angola have confirmed that the country has recorded the first two cases of the deadly Zika virus in the country.
The Zika virus first made international headlines in 2015, after an outbreak of the virus happened in Brazil.
Fears over contracting the virus from the South American country sent the world into a flat spin, and essentially put a damper on attendees for last year’s Summer Olympics in Rio De Janeiro.
The Angolan health officials said that the two cases reported were that of a local resident from the country’s capital of Luanda and a French tourist.
According to the Head of the Department of Hygiene in Angola, Eusebio Manuel, the French tourist that had been diagnosed with the Zika virus in Angola, had already left the country in November. It is believed that he is receiving treatment elsewhere.
As for the local patient that was diagnosed with the disease, he is currently being treated in hospital in the country.
“…[this] case concerns an Angolan patient who lives in Luanda and was diagnosed last week [sic],” Manuel said. He confirmed that the patient was still in hospital.
