Angela Merkel Arrives in Ethiopia

October 11, 2016

German chancellor, Angela Merkel, has arrived in Ethiopia as a first stop on her three-day African tour.

Merkel’s presence in the country comes just as the Ethiopian government declared a state of emergency, following a wave of protests in the country.

This is the first time in 25 years that Ethiopia has declared a state of emergency.

Merkel is said to address various issues – including the new state of emergency – with Ethiopia’s prime minister.

Other issues the chancellor will discuss is the ongoing migrant issue that has seen thousands of migrants flee from areas such as South Sudan, Somalia, Libya and other African countries to Europe.

As to the current state of emergency in the country, protests have erupted over the past couple of months from locals demanding more freedom. The protests also addressed various human rights issues in the country.

However, the protests turned violent and got out of control.

Last week, a protest linked stampede cost the lives of 50 people, which then in turn ed to further demonstrations.

A spokesperson for Merkel has also said that she will address human rights issues in Ethiopia whilst in the country.
