Ajax’s 4-1 Victory Sends Real Madrid Packing

Real Madrid’s Champions League reign has come to an end, after suffering a shocking 4-1 knockout at the hands of a triumphant Ajax Amsterdam on Tuesday, 5 March.

Fans at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid, Spain, bore witness to the seven-time champions’ defeat, which comes after the club’s back-to-back losses to Barcelona in both the Copa del Rey and La Liga football competitions.

Ajax players, Hakim Ziyech and David Neres, scored one goal apiece in the first half, before team-mate Dusan Tadic clinched a third in the second half.

Despite Marco Asensio striking back in the 70th minute to give his team their only goal, Los Blancos’ hopes were dashed when Ajax’s Lasse Schone scored two minutes later.

In a post-match interview, Real defender Dani Carvajal commented on the loss: “I think I have never felt this awful, I do not know how to explain it.”

He added: “This week, everything has gone against us. Tonight, we cannot look for excuses. We have to show our faces and not hide.”
