Midfielder Aitana Bonmati is still feeling the pangs of disappointment following Spain’s UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 loss to England on Sunday, 27 July.

Playing at St. Jakob-Park in Basel, Switzerland, the Lionesses beat La Roja 3-1 on penalties after drawing 1-1 in extra time to retain the European Championship.

Taking to Instagram on Monday, 28 July, Bonmati shared photos of herself during and after the final. The images include pictures of her despondent expression following the medal ceremony, as well as shots of her being consoled by her teammates.

“[The loss is] still hard to assimilate, but there’s no choice but to accept it,” the translated caption reads. “Proud of the team and the tournament we [took part in]. Thank you for so much support. We’ll definitely be back.”

The 27-year-old Spaniard – who was named “Player of the Tournament” by UEFA – then added in English: “It will hurt for some time, but [I am] still proud of our journey. Thanks to all the fans, Switzerland and to the @weuro2025 for organising such a great tournament. And congratulations to England.”

Many fans in the comments shared their support for Bonmati. One user wrote: “Always proud of you … You did your best in the games you played. Take care.”
