African Legend Named Ballon d’Or Ambassador
France Football has announced African football icon, Didier Drogba, as the new Ballon d’Or ambassador who will co-host the award ceremony on Saturday, 2 December in Paris, France.
The Ivorian international announced his retirement from ‘the beautiful game’ in November 2018 at age 40. The great Drogba scored 164 goals in 381 appearances for Chelsea, winning four Premier League titles, four FA Cups, and the 2012 Champions League title. He remains Ivory Coast’s all-time record goalscorer with 65 goals.
Earlier this year, Chelsea offered their legend an opportunity to return to Stamford Bridge in a coaching role, but the Ivorian man declined the proposal, saying he prefers ambassadorial duties. And today, he has landed one of the best ambassadorial positions in football.
In addition to his hosting duties, the former Blues striker will also do the honours of presenting the prestigious award to the winner.
Despite not ever receiving the celebrated award, Drogba feels honoured by this opportunity. He said: “I feel honoured to present this prestigious award. I see it as an acknowledgement of my career and its exemplarity”.
