AFCON 2019: Winning Starts and Narrow Grasps

June 24, 2019

The weekend saw a mixed bag of results from the African Cup of Nations tournament: Algeria launched their campaign with a 2-0 win over Kenya; Senegal thumped Tanzania 2-0 and Morocco barely earned their 1-0 victory over Namibia.

Algeria took full advantage of Kenya’s mistakes to score a penalty in the 34th minute, and doubled their lead just before the half-time whistle when a shot from Ismael Bennacer was deflected by Abud Omar to make the score 2-0 – handing them an easy win in Group C.

Senegal are largely seen as favourites to win the title this year and they proved their potential by winning their opening AFCON match against Tanzania.

The Teranga Lions roared in the second half with a precision strike from Keita Balde to put them 1-0 on the board. Krepin Diatta handed his team a 2-0 victory in Group C after he launched a thunderbolt from a Balde corner kick into the Tanzanian net.

Morocco played a less than convincing game against a feisty Namibia, but nevertheless grabbed a literal last-minute goal when one of Namibia’s own headed the ball into his own net to give the Atlas Lions a win in Group D.
