Adele Accused of Cultural Appropriation
British songstress, Adele, has come under fire for posting a photograph that apparently depicts cultural appropriation.
On Sunday, 30 August, the 32-year-old “Hello” hitmaker posted a photo of herself to Instagram. In it, she is seen wearing a bikini top in the design of the Jamaican flag, as well as black-and-white, tye-dye leggings and yellow wings.
Additionally, her hair is braided into Bantu knots, a type of hairstyle that has its origins in Africa.
In the caption, Adele wrote: “Happy what would be Notting Hill Carnival my beloved London [sic].”
This is in reference to the London festival that is held annually to celebrate the British West Indian community, but was postponed to 29-31 August online this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Social media users immediately took issue with Adele’s photo – which was presumably taken at the festival last year – with one writing: “With all this racial injustice going on @Adel thought this was ok?? [sic]”
Another wrote: “This officially marks all of the top white women in pop as problematic. Hate to see it.”
Adele has yet to respond to the backlash.
