
Actor John Witherspoon Dies at 77
American actor and comedian, John Witherspoon, passed away on Tuesday, 29 October, at the age of 77.
His manager, Alex Goodman, confirmed the news as he read a prepared statement from Witherspoon’s family to reporters.
It read: “It is with deepest sorrow that we can confirm our beloved husband and father, John Witherspoon, one of the hardest working men in show business, died today in Sherman Oaks at the age of 77.”
Witherspoon was born in 1942, and started his career in stand-up comedy. He eventually began acting in the 1970s.
He gained popularity for roles such as “Pops” in the ‘90s sitcom “The Wayan Bros”, and “Robert ‘Grandad’ Freeman” in the animated adult sitcom “The Boondocks”. He was best known for his part as “Willie Jones” in the “Friday” film series.
Witherspoon’s cause of death is unknown at this time. He is survived by a large family, which includes his wife, Angela, and his two sons, JD and Alexander.
