9 Games Later: No Hope for Arsenal
Arsenal is circling the drain after losing 2-1 to Brighton at Emirates Stadium on Thursday evening, 6 December.
The Gunners have now gone nine games without a single win, leaving acting coach Freddie Ljungberg with a steep climb to get the club back on the road to winning trophies.
The 42-year-old Swede took over the reins after Unai Emery was fired last week Friday, 29 November, after Arsenal saw a 2-1 defeat at home to Eintracht Frankfurt.
The group stage loss effectively denied them a chance to compete in the UEFA Europa League.
In a post-match interview, Ljungberg explained that he had an earnest talk with his players at half-time, not mincing his words with the team who was eager to please the home crowd.
He said: “We said, ‘This is not Arsenal, we have to give it a crack’ … We didn’t show up in the first half, didn’t work hard and didn’t want to play. You can’t start like that.”
Time will tell if the Gunners will find their feet again.
