75 000 Nigerian Children at Risk of Dying
The United Nations has pleaded with various human rights organizations to urgently help them with funding programmes for Nigeria, as they claim that more than 75 000 Nigerian children are at the risk of dying.
Peter Lundberg, a humanitarian coordinator for the United Nations, has said that 75 000 children could die within months.
He said that the crisis in Nigeria – with the lack of resources – is unfolding at a tremendous pace and that millions of people are in urgent need of humanitarian help.
“…currently our assessment is that 14 million people are identified as in need of humanitarian assistance,” he said.
He continued saying that out of that 14 million, 400 000 children are in critical need of serious humanitarian attention and help.
The resurgence of terrorist group, Boko Haram, has caused millions of Nigerians to be displaced and thus these people are struggling with a host of humanitarian issues.
The biggest issues these affected people in Nigeria face is hunger and sanitation. Poor sanitation has led to various diseases – like cholera – re-appearing in the country.
The UN has also said that they hope to target half of the 14 million people with their resources, while the Nigerian government will target the other half.
