6ix9ine: Fresh Out of Prison and Making Waves

May 12, 2020

Tekashi 6ix9ine was released from prison four months early, and already the rapper is breaking records.

The 24-year-old rapper – real name Daniel Hernandez – enjoyed freedom on 2 April, after a federal judge gave him a “compassionate” release after serving only five months of his 24-month sentence.

Last Friday, 8 May, he released a new track and music video created during his home confinement following his brief prison stint.

The single, “GOOBA”, blew up on social media, and recorded the fastest 24-hour debut for a hip-hop video in YouTube history. It currently has over 111 million views.

In the video, Hernandez puts on a multi-coloured spectacle with a bevy of women and a puppy. His ankle monitor can also be seen in shots.

It surpassed the previous record held by Eminem’s “Killshot” – a diss track aimed at Machine Gun Kelly – which racked up more than 36 million views within its first 24 hours in 2018.

On the same day of his single release, Hernandez also broke the record for most Instagram Live viewers when he took to the platform to discuss being called a “rat”. At the video’s peak, he had over two million eyes on him.

He received major backlash for “snitching” on the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods gang; in the video, he primarily addressed rumours surrounding gang members, as well as the mother of his daughter.

He said: “My fans, my family don’t deserve that, and I’m sorry. Listen, I snitched [and] I ratted, but who was I supposed to be loyal to?”
