A passenger plane carrying coronavirus aid supplies has crashed in Somalia, killing all six people aboard.

Per reports, the aircraft – which belonged to African Express Airways – was scheduled to fly from the capital city of Mogadishu to Bardale in South West State on Monday, 4 May.

After stopping over in the town of Baidoa, the plane continued on its journey, before it crashed into a small area located a short distance away from Bardale’s airport.

According to Abdirashid Abdullahi Mohamed, Somalia’s former minister of defence, a witness claimed that the plane made an initial attempt to land.

However, it swung around again because of wildlife on the airfield, and then appeared to be shot on one wing by security forces in the area on its second approach.

The six victims include the pilot, co-pilot, flight engineer and a trainee pilot, as well as two people working for the airline. Two of the casualties have been identified as Somali internationals, while one hailed from Kenya.

Full details of the others have yet to be disclosed. An investigation into the crash is currently underway.
