3 Ugandans Arrested in Connection with Mozambique Attacks
Three Ugandan people have been arrested on suspicion of orchestrating terror attacks in Mozambique’s gas-rich Cabo Delgado province.
According to media reports, the three suspects – two men and a woman – were detained by the Mozambican police on Friday, 25 January, in a forested area of the province. As a result, several “training camps” were shut down by the police.
One of the captured suspects – known as Abdulrahim Faiza – told reporters that although he was involved with Al-Shabaab in Uganda, he denied any involvement in any attacks in the country.
He said: “I am not part of the groups that have carried out attacks in Cabo Delgado. We are in Mozambique to rescue our captured leader [Abdul Aziz].”
Since 2017, more than 100 civilians and policemen have been killed in terror attacks that have emerged in Cabo Delgado. The Islamist group, Al-Shabaab, reportedly seek to impose Sharia law in the Muslim-majority province.
