According to an Everest expedition agency in Nepal, three Everest climbers died on the famous mountain over the weekend, with another person still missing.

Each year Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world, attracts thousands of mountain climbers seeking to reach its peak, 8,848 metres above sea level.

According to officials from Nepal’s capital of Kathmandu, the three people who died on the mountain over the weekend were all of different nationalities.

An American climber from Alabama is said to have died near the summit of the mountain on Sunday. Details of his death have not been released to the media.

Another climber from Slovakia, also died on Sunday and it has been confirmed that his body was found and brought to the South Col Camp.

An Australian climber died on the Chinese side of the mountain, but no other details of his death were available.

The trekking agency also confirmed that one climber was still missing.

A man from India, who had been trekking the mountain with a Nepalese Sherpa guide, is said to have successfully made the ascent to the summit of the mountain.

However, on his way down, he allegedly fell sick and did not make it to South Col, the nearest camp. The guide he was trekking with had also fallen sick, however did manage to make it to the South Col camp where he received medical attention.

A source told the media that the guide was suffering from frostbite and had to be given oxygen.

The death toll for climbers on Mount Everest during the current climbing season – which started in March and lasts until the end of May – has gone up to five now.
