March 04, 2020

At least 24 people have lost their lives and 150 others left injured after two tornadoes struck central Tennessee in the United States of America on Tuesday morning, 3 March.

Travelling at winds of up to 266 km/h, the tornadoes left a trail of desolation in their wake after hitting the capital city of Nashville, as well as Putnam County, Mount Juliet and Donelson.

Damage from the tornadoes include the destruction of 48 buildings, toppled power lines, wrecked aircrafts at a local airport, and leaking gas lines.

John Cooper, the mayor of Nashville, stated that the injured have been transported to medical facilities for treatment.

The city’s Emergency Operations Centre opened a shelter with running water in a farmer’s market to help displaced residents from affected areas. Additionally, local schools, courts and transport lines were closed for the rest of the day.

Meanwhile, efforts are being made to locate an undetermined number of people who have gone missing since the tornadoes struck.
