21 Zimbabwean Women Find Refuge In Kuwait

April 04, 2016

Various news reports are stating that approximately 21 Zimbabwean women have found refuge in a sort-of shelter for “runaway maids” in Kuwait, after being lured there by human traffickers.

Last week, reports rolled in about close to 200 Zimbabwean women that had been lured to Kuwait and promised full, paying jobs in the country.

However, it was soon discovered that these so-called paying jobs was anything but, and that in actual fact the women were basically handled as human slaves.

The women were subjected to abuse and harassment – sexual and physical – by the people they allegedly “worked” for.

Now, a further 21 Zimbabwean women have luckily found refuge at a shelter that provides for women in their situation.

According to Zimbabwean authorities, they had now managed to repatriate 21 women, up from the 15 reported at the weekend.

However, that is not all the women. There are still believed to be close to 90 Zimbabwean women either on their way to Kuwait or already in the country. These stats are according to immigration, as they believe there has at least 90 visas granted in the last few weeks.

According to other reports, women from all over the world are being lured to Kuwait, where they are promised paying jobs in good conditions. However, upon arrival, it’s a completely different story.

The Zimbabwean embassy in Kuwait has confirmed that 26 Zimbabwean nationals have called out for help in this situation in Kuwait, and that they are giving them assistance.

“…[sic] The ministry further updates that 21 of our citizens are back in the country and a further 21 are being sheltered at a Kuwaiti shelter for runaway maids…Our embassy in Kuwait has further pointed out that 26 of our nationals have called for assistance as they are still being held in Kuwaiti homes,” the Zimbabwean foreign ministry said.
