2017 Emmy Awards: Highlights and Winners
The most prestigious people in television gathered in Los Angeles last night for the 69th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards. In addition to the glitz and glamour, the ceremony was filled with political jokes, emotional moments, and new records.
At one stage, comedic host, Stephen Colbert, brought on a surprise political guest, Sean Spicer. Colbert commented that it was difficult to tell how big the audience would be, at which point Sean Spicer wheeled a podium onto the stage.
Spicer, former White House Press Secretary for Donald Trump, is known for maintaining that Trump’s inauguration was the biggest in history, despite photo evidence to the contrary.
He proceeded to poke fun at himself: “This will be the largest audience to witness an Emmys period, both in person and around the world,” Spicer said.
The real records of the evening, however, were awarded to some of America’s finest actors in prime time television programmes.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus set a new Emmys record for winning the most awards for the same show – six in a row for her comedy show, “Veep”.
Lena Waithe became the first black woman to win for comedy writing, for her work on Aziz Ansari’s “Master of None”.
Riz Ahmed became the first Muslim, and man of Asian descent, to win an Emmy for acting, for his lead performance in the drama, “The Night Of”.
