2 Employees Kidnapped from Cameroonian University
Two staff members have been kidnapped from a university in Cameroon’s war-torn southwest region.
Professor Charles Doumta – a member of the Health Sciences faculty – and George Ongey – who works for the research and cooperation office – were abducted from the University of Buea on Friday, 10 November.
In a statement released on Sunday, 18 November by the university’s vice-chancellor, Ngomo Horace Manga, the kidnappings were “meant to intimidate, create fear and panic among staff and students, and disrupt the smooth functioning of the academic year”.
No one has yet claimed responsibility for the abductions.
This incident comes six days after 78 children and three staff members were kidnapped – and later freed – by armed separatists from a boarding school in a village near the capital, Bamenda.
The kidnappers called themselves the Amba Boys, a clear reference to the state of Ambazonia that English-speaking separatists are trying to establish in the country in defiance of the French-speaking government.
