Arsenal Show Title Steel with Dramatic Win at Newcastle
Arsenal delivered a stirring comeback to keep the English Premier League (EPL) title race finely poised, overturning a first-half deficit to beat Newcastle 2-1 on Sunday, 28 September.
Nick Woltemade’s powerful header put Newcastle in front at the 34th-minute mark and, for much of the game, it seemed like Mikel Arteta’s side would endure another grim evening at St James’ Park in Newcastle, England. They had suffered three straight defeats at this ground, and frustration grew after a VAR decision overturned a penalty and Leandro Trossard struck the post.
However, the Gunners’ resilience shone through. With six minutes of game time remaining, Mikel Merino glanced in Declan Rice’s cross to level the scoreboard. The visitors sensed momentum, and in the sixth minute of stoppage time, Gabriel Magalhaes rose high to meet Martin Odegaard’s corner, sparking wild celebrations among the players and the travelling fans.
“It was an opportunity to show who we are,” Arteta beamed afterwards. “The team has done that in a remarkable way.”
The win lifts Arsenal to 13 points on the EPL table, within two points of leaders Liverpool, who stumbled against Crystal Palace a day earlier. For Newcastle, the late defeat was compounded by a worrying knee injury to full-back Tino Livramento, with Eddie Howe describing the evening as “intensely painful.”
